'shakedown at e-town' gets southern exposure

jupiter, fla. -- new york motorsports promoter dave hance's wildly popular "shakedown at e-town" is expanding in 2011-- and heading south.

"the shakedown palm beach" heads-up eighth-mile doorslammer spectacular is headed to florida friday and saturday, march 4-5, at palm beach international raceway in jupiter, florida. A full day of test-and-tune thursday, march 3 will give fans an even greater chance to enjoy the six classes, which include a showcase for motorcycles.

The wayne mcmurtry-designed all-concrete pbir dragstrip promises ultra-quick elapsed times and extraordinary speeds from the pro modified, outlaw 10.5, outlaw drag radial/limited street, pro import and pro drag bike classes, as well as the electrifying and keenly competitive small-tire x275 category.

"i'm very happy to have the opportunity to expand our heads-up program," hance said. "organizing a race in the south is something that always appealed to me. After eight years, we feel this could be the right time to have an additional race. We thank the entire pbir staff for all its help in making this happen, and we are extremely excited about this race."

a special qualifying feature will revive the north-versus-south rivalry that the new jersey edition of the shakedown has made so famous. With tim lynch's record-setting, event-winning performances at old bridge township raceway park's classic "shakedown at e-town" fueling the duel against long island's and the northeast's toughest outlaw 10.5 racers, this format is sure to be a crowd-pleaser.

During outlaw 10.5 qualifying -- and hance said, possibly other classes -- cars from the north will pair with cars from the south. At the end of qualifying, whichever "team" has the most "round-wins" will be declared qualifying champion.

"we always have a lot of fun with the north-south challenge," hance said, "but to be honest, the shakedown always has drawn the best racers from all parts of the country. And we know the shakedown palm beach will be no different.

"the only thing different," he said, "might be a little warmer climate in beautiful south florida. The shakedown at e-town always has been dramatic for its unpredictable weather but usually chilly temperatures. Of course, the cooler temperatures mean outstanding e.t.s. Whether we're in new jersey in late fall or at palm beach international raceway as spring approaches, we'll see some cool cars and hot numbers."

the pro modified winner will receive $10,000 of the $30,000 purse, and the outlaw 10.5 winner will take home $10,000 of the $18,000 purse. The winner’s payout will be $5,000 for the outlaw drag radian/limited street, x275 drag radial, pro import, and pro drag bike classes. Each class will have 16-car fields.

Just as at the shakedown at e-town, the fun-loving and knowledgeable tandem of al tucci and brian olson will provide the announcing.

Tickets are available at the gate throughout the event. Cost is $30 for an adult daily pass and $50 adult weekend pass. Fans aged 12 and under will be admitted free.

Entry fee is $200 for a tech card that includes car and driver. Crew-member weekend passes are $50 each.

About the shakedown:

Driver/promoter dave hance, owner of new york motorsports, has emerged as not only one of the premier outlaw drag racers but also one of the most successful promoters. Every autumn for the past eight years, the nation's most successful outlaw-style drag racers have taken their chances at englishtown, n.j.'s old bridge township raceway park and hance's shakedown at e-town that has become more popular every racing season. With a frenzied rush against impending storms or the evening curfew always producing a blend of history and hysteria, no performance record ever is safe at the shakedown at e-town. The 2010 winners are tim lynch (outlaw 10.5), chip king (blown pro modified), khalid al balooshi (nitrous pro modified), pete berner (mountain motor pro stock), mike stawicki (1/8-mile challenge), sam gottier (heavy street), mel nelson (drag radial), and brian ferrari (8.50 index).
