Semifinal Finish for Tony Schumacher in Las Vegas
LAS VEGAS (April 3, 2022) – Tony Schumacher and the Maynard Family Racing team continue to show improvement with each race weekend, and the NHRA Four-Wide Nationals, stop No. 4 on the 22-race tour, was no exception. Schumacher secured a Top 10 qualifying position, starting race day from the ninth seed, and the 85-time race winner used his starting line advantage to cross the beams second among his quad to advance to the second round of eliminations.
In round two, Schumacher clocked his best run of the weekend (3.733-seconds) in the heat of the day to win his quad and score a bid to the final elimination round. While Schumacher, the most successful driver in NHRA Top Fuel history, has checked nearly every item on the list, a Wally trophy from a four-wide event has continued to elude him. He was hoping Sunday would be his day, but his 11,000-horsepower machine lost traction early into the run, forcing the eight-time series champion to have to wait until the upcoming Charlotte race to have another shot at a four-wide victory.
“This is a good day for our team,” said Schumacher. “We had a lucky first round and an excellent second round with that 3.73 and we went out and tried to run a 3.70-flat or a .69 in the finals, but it was just a little fast. I’m happy as can be with the performance of the car and Todd (Okuhara) is getting a good handle on things. And, hey, we’re going to a home race next, Houston. We won it in 2020. We live a few hours away and we’ll have a lot of family and friends there cheering us on.”
By recording a semifinal finish, Schumacher, a resident of Austin, Texas, and the Maynard Family Racing team will start the NHRA SpringNationals in Baytown, Texas ranked seventh in the Top Fuel point standings.
