CHANDLER, Ariz. (Feb. 24, 2013) - This is not how Jack Beckman and the MTS Mail for Wounded Warriors/Valvoline expected the 2013 NHRA Mello Yello Drag Racing Series to begin.
It's not that the team expected anything to be handed to them after rallying from a slow start last year to win the NHRA Funny Car world championship.
But losing in the first round of championship eliminations in each of the first two events was furthest from their minds when the season began.
"This certainly isn't what this team expected when we started the year, but we're going to get it figured out," said Beckman, who has won three of his 15 NHRA Funny Car titles in the NHRA Arizona Nationals for Don Schumacher Racing at Firebird International Raceway near Phoenix.
"We thought we had it figured out after we made a pretty good run Saturday afternoon."
Beckman qualified No. 10 with a time of 4.139 second but didn't have lane choice against seventh-seeded Bob Tasca III. Beckman finished his run opening run at 6.342 seconds (111.57) to Tasca's slow but winning 4.336 (221.78).
