[coverattach=1]Pomona, Friday: Tony “The Sarge” Schumacher, aboard his U.S. Army Top Fuel dragster, remained out of the show here Friday following a tire-smoking effort in the second round of qualifying for the Auto Club of Southern California Finals at Auto Club Raceway.
The recently crowned POWERade world champion will have two more chances on Saturday to try and make the 16-car race day field.
“We had to deal with a real hot track surface today,” said Schumacher. “We’ll be fine. We just need to go out there tomorrow in the opening session and get down the track cleanly. As long as we land somewhere in the line up, we have the opportunity to go after the win.”
Schumacher is eager to contend for a record-setting 16th victory. Additionally, he’s seeking the single season round win record.
“Our first order of business is to get qualified and then we’ll think about everything else,” he added. “This U.S. Army team does a great job of focusing on what’s right in front of them.”
