Indianapolis, Friday: Tony "The Sarge" Schumacher, who directs the U.S. Army Top Fuel dragster, grabbed the 11th starting spot here Friday after the opening day of qualifying for the 52nd annual Mac Tools U.S. Nationals at O'Reilly Raceway Park.
Schumacher clocked a 4.591-second trip at 304.12 mph to earn a provisional starting spot in the NHRA's most prestigious race.
"We'll have to take a good look at the data, but I'm sure something wasn't totally right with that run," said the four-time U.S. Nationals event champ. "I'm pretty sure Alan Johnson (his crew chief) had other numbers in mind. We'll take another swing at it tomorrow."
Schumacher came into the weekend chasing leader, Doug Kalitta, in the points. He entered 136 points behind.
