LAS VEGAS (April 12, 2008) - Gary Scelzi posted a series of solid passes in the Mopar/Oakley Dodge Charger R/T Funny Car to qualify No. 7 at the NHRA Nationals at The Strip at Las Vegas Motor Speedway. The 4.887-second elapsed time at 314.39 mph he set in Friday's second session earned him that spot in the top half of the field.
His other laps included a 5.150/289.07, a 5.918/164.13, and a 4.917/310.98.
While some drivers in the rest of the Funny Car field were enjoying their best passes in the final session under good conditions, Scelzi wasn't able to take advantage. But, being solidly in the field going into the final round was enough solace for the four-time NHRA world champion.
"It didn't quite give us what we wanted," he said of that last attempt, "but it's close. We'll race good tomorrow."
Scelzi faces reigning Funny Car champion and No. 10 qualifier Tony Pedregon in the opening round of Sunday's eliminations.
