POMONA, Calif. (Nov. 11, 2006) - Gary Scelzi, the reigning NHRA POWERade Drag Racing Series Funny Car champion, posted three out of four solid passes to qualify No. 10 for the Automobile Club of Southern California NHRA Nationals, with his best run a 4.766-second pass at 325.92 mph in the final qualifying round.
Following his tire-smoking opening attempt of 8.469/96.14, the driver of the Mopar/Oakley Dodge Charger R/T also recorded a 4.824/322.58 and a4.791/328.70 pass.
"Three for four," he said. "We went quicker every run. We would have liked to have gone a little quicker, but we think we're going to be OK tomorrow. There's one piece of this puzzle that we just found that we're going to try tomorrow, and if this works we should be able to play with the boys. So, we'll keep our fingers crossed, go up there and hit the gas and see if we can turn on some win lights."
And be a spoiler in the championship chase among John Force, Ron Capps and Robert Hight, as he suggested earlier this week? "That would be a great idea," he said.
Scelzi faces Tommy Johnson Jr. in first round of Sunday's eliminations.
