(3-24-2008) Middleton, Mass - John Russo, the soft spoken cabinet maker from Massachusetts has stunned the drag racing community during preseason testing at South Georgia Motorsports Park by running the quickest elapsed time ever in the Pro modified class.
It has been a few weeks since testing, and the events of that fateful day are finally sinking in. ”Man... I ran the quickest lap ever.” exclaimed Russo.
While driving his 1968 Firebird constructed late last season by the talented Jim Geese at his Vanishing Point Race Cars shop, and equipped with an Al Billes built and tuned BAE Hemi between the frame rails Russo thundered to an unexpected 5.895 second elapsed time at 246.21 mph.
“Knowing what we had when Jim built us this car and with all the R&D Al has done this winter on our engine program we knew the car would be fast….but this was completely unexpected. To be the quickest car on the planet is amazing. This is an outstanding way for our dedicated , hardworking team to start the 2008 season. We can’t wait to get back to the track.” said Russo.
“I am just thankful for the opportunity to be competitive with the culmination of all the key ingredients. A great team in Malcolm, Theo and of course my loving, supportive wife Sue. A solid race car thanks to Jim Geese. And the stellar tuning abilities of my engine builder Al Billes.” Russo has definitely served notice that he's going to be one of the guys to beat in 2008
