<P> (9/2/08) Indianapolis, IN Most of the drivers competing in the prestigious NHRA JEGS ProMod Challenge will tell you that their ultimate goal is to win the championship, but a close second will always be to take home the win at the coveted Mac Tools U.S. nationals. Danny Rowe, driver of the Hottinger Group Pro Mod Camaro, had as good of a shot at scoring a win this weekend at the ‘Big Go’, but a second-round loss to eventual runner-up Josh Hernandez ended his hopes a little early. Now, Rowe’s focus goes to the long-term and doing whatever it takes to secure the JEGS ProMod Challenge title.
After an impressive qualifying effort (6.045/237.50) that earned him the No. 8 starting position for Sunday night’s elimination round, team-owner and driver Rowe was confident in his first-round pairing with Taylor Lastor.
“The quality of cars here this weekend simply doesn’t allow a driver to rest on his laurels,” said Rowe. “As much confidence as I have in this team and our abilities, I know that we’re surrounded by the best of the best here in Indianapolis and it’s going to take being perfect on every run to go the distance.”
Rowe continued, “With Tony [Pontieri], the points leader, missing the field this weekend, there is a real opportunity for us to gain some valuable ground, but we’ve got to get pass the first round and into the final elimination rounds on Monday if we’re going to take advantage of the situation.”
In the opening round of eliminations, the Hottinger Group team relied on Rowe’s reaction time to gain the win over a game Taylor Lastor who’s quicker, but losing 6.093/238.72 wasn’t enough to catch Danny’s 6.098/237.67 pass.
The challenge remained, though, as Rowe would have to face 2007 NHRA JEGS ProMod Challenge champion Joshua Hernandez in the second round. When the smoke cleared and the parachutes blossomed, the win light, unfortunately, was in Hernandez’s lane – bringing the Mac Tools U.S. Nationals to an end a little early for Danny Rowe.
"At the end of the day, we’ve got a two-car team with both cars in the Top 5 in the point standings,” said Rowe, who receives additional support from NGK Spark Plugs. “We would have loved to have had both these hot rods in the final together, but we’re focused on moving forward. Going into Dallas, I’m confident in our program and our goals remain the same – win this JEGS ProMod Challenge championship. We’re anxious to get right back to business and we know the pressure is on as we’re not the only ones with championship intentions.”
