ROWE RACING FOR A HIGHER PURPOSE IN DALLAS

<p>(9-19-2008) LAGUNA HILLS, Calif. – On the heels of a quarter-final round finish at the 54th annual Mac Tools U.S. Nationals, Danny Rowe has high expectations of his Hottinger Group ’67 Camaro going into the final stretch of the 2008 JEGS ProMod Challenge series, but this weekend at the NHRA Fall Nationals he’ll be racing for more than just championship points – he’ll be racing in remembrance and celebration of the life of his fallen Pro Mod comrade Steve Engel.
Engel, a veteran driver and longtime supporter of the NHRA JEGS ProMod Challenge, died suddenly at the age of 49 after showing significant signs of improvement following a serious one-car accident at the Mac Tools U.S. Nationals in Indianapolis.
“We’re going to be racing for a higher purpose this weekend in Dallas,” said an obviously distraught Danny Rowe. “Our thoughts and prayers are with the Engel family as they endure this very difficult and trying time. Steve was a great competitor, a great friend and one of the best people I’ve had the pleasure of knowing and we’ll never forget him.”
Despite the tragedy the JEGS ProMod Challenge will resume this weekend at Texas Motorplex just outside of Dallas during the NHRA Fall Nationals. One of the two all-concrete quarter-miles on the schedule and the cool conditions generally provided during the late weeks of September, one can only anticipate an absolute barn-burner. Jimmy Rector, crew chief for the Hottinger Group ’67 Camaro, will surely be making the most of the available traction and conditions to put Rowe well into the five-second zone.
“I think we’ve got a good shot,” said Rowe. “We’ve been doing everything we need to do as a team; we’ve been consistent, we’re going rounds, qualifying well and I have to believe that it’s going to translate into a win. Considering the facility and the weather forecast, I think we’re in for a very exciting weekend. The quality of cars here in the JEGS ProMod Challenge is at a level that I don’t think has ever been seen before in Pro Modified racing. The talent amongst the crew chiefs and drivers is incredible, so I know we’ve got our work cut out for us, but we know what we have to do and we’re as focused as ever.”
Rowe currently occupies the No. 4 spot in the championship points with teammate Kirk Kuhns only a few points behind in fifth. With two races left on the schedule and only 103 points separating Rowe from points-leader Josh Hernandez, it’s still anyone’s ball game.
Kuhns, driver of the Embee Performance/General Plumbing ’41 Willys, also exited in the first-round in Indianapolis, but looks to get back on track at Dallas alongside his teammate – possibly securing a 1-2 finish in the points.
“We couldn’t be happier with the success we’ve seen this year as a new team,” said Kuhns. “Obviously, we’d like to win every race we go to, but we’re competing with the best of the best and we’ve been a contender at every event this year. Jimmy Rector has a handle on both of these hot rods and I can see a Kuhns-Rowe final round this Sunday.”
