INDIANAPOLIS, Sept. 1, 2008 -- Traction trouble set in early for Frank Hawley Monday in the first round of the U.S. Nationals, slowing the R2B2 Racing Rite Aid Dodge Charger R/T Funny Car and helping Robert Hight turn on the win light at O'Reilly Raceway Park.
Hight, who had traction problems of his own, was timed in 4.894 seconds at 249.07 mph to Hawley's 5.211 at 204.70.
"I was disappointed we weren't able to get a U.S. Nationals round win for Rite Aid," said Hawley, a two-time NHRA Funny Car series champion (1982-83). "The throttle switch broke on the run and that hurt our performance. But we've been able to show in races here and at Reading (Pa.) that we have a fast car. We are looking forward to regrouping and getting ready for our next race."
