I believe it was 1991 when I took this photo. Richard Holcomb had passed away the day before at the Atlanta race and the crew pulled his dragster down the track before eliminations. What a poignant moment. Richard was the third car to run in the 4's.

Wayne.

Funny you post this, I grew up only about 2 miles from Richard's shop and went over there quite often. I also went to school with the late Clayton Harris' daughter Meghan. I actually sat in the car that was 3rd in fours and went through what a run was like with Richard's son!! I grew up in a drag racing family and always have wanted to run TF so this was a dream at 15 yrs old.

How did he go? I remember that car,had the rear thin rear.

I remember that was a pretty slick car. It had the narrow rear and if I remember right, there was some issue about that car with NHRA. I believe Richard ran the rear wheels backwards to get the rear wheels even closer together. NHRA didn't think the wheels were safe to be run that way so they made him turn them back around. I never met Richard Holcomb but I've heard he was a good guy.

have old vcr tape called 'nitro thunder' or something like that,
displays quite a few tf's and fc's from that era, mostly ihra footage
and a lot from old bristol........richard's tf'er is featured more than once.

3rd into 4's.......@ ihra event?

Didn't Richard Holcomb have a Blowover back in 90-91? I saw footage of it on one of those Main event crash tapes. Someone told me that was him.

I don't remember Richard Holcomb having a blowover. I think Jimmy Nix had a car that had a similar paint scheme to Richard's on a car that blewover in Houston circa 1989.

You're right, Paul..........Bradenton Motorsports Park (DeSoto Dragway) back when they had 8 car invitational Snowbirds and booked in F/C's.

Late..........Mitch

If you look under NHRA's Performance Club section, he ran in the fours on Oct. 5th 1988, 4.998 in Dallas (3rd on the list). If I am not mistaken that particular run was made in a different car than the one in the photo. He had the "4" car hanging in his shop later. He also had a mishap with Shirley in Atlanta around that time. Forgot about the blowover.

Wasn't Clayton's daughter killed in the same plane crash Clayton died in? Or she survived?

Local plane crash kills race car driver
