The PEAK team had a great weekend overall at the Toyota NHRA Nationals in Las Vegas. While Duane Shields wasn’t the high roller in the Top Alcohol Dragster class he was happy about how well the PEAK A/Fuel Dragster ran. “We brought out our 2008 car which we have been trying to sell. We wanted to demonstrate to any interested buyers that the car is for sale and it's still competitive” Duane said. Competitive it is! The car qualified sixth out of 23 cars with a strong 5.36 at 269 MPH. In addition, the PEAK Team hosted a dinner for all of the Top Alcohol competitors which attracted over 100 people on Friday night.
Duane’s first round opponent was Al Moeser who qualified 10th with a 5.38 so it appeared to be a fairly competitive match up. As the lights came down Duane was off the line first with a 0.065 to Moeser’s 0.093. Duane gained momentum all the way down the Las Vegas strip. Moeser meanwhile did a spectacular wheelstand and wasn’t even close to replicating his qualifying time. Duane stopped the clock with a respectable 5.44 at 263 MPH to take the win. Moeser recorded an 8.20 for the wheelstanding loss.
In round two, Duane went up against Michael Manners who is a familiar competitor which the PEAK team had not raced against all season. At the hit, Duane was out of the box first with a 0.067 to Manners' close 0.068. It was a close side-by-side race all the way to the finish line but Manners continued to stay ahead by half of a car length to take the win. Manners ran an impressive 5.29 at 264 MPH over Duane’s 5.36 at 270 MPH. “He runs on the edge and smoked the tires in the next round. Our tune up was less aggressive because we wanted to be sure and get down the track on every pass. It would have been nice to have gone a couple more rounds for our hometown fans but I’m happy the car ran well. It responded to our adjustments and we have a good baseline to work with next weekend” Duane said.
Next weekend at Las Vegas Motor Speedway is the final Lucas Oil Regional Drag Racing Series event of the season and most of the Top Alcohol teams stick around for this exciting race. All Shortline Express Stores in the Las Vegas area have free tickets at the counter for Saturday's qualifying! Duane would like to thank his sponsors PEAK Antifreeze and Motor Oil, Final Charge, Blue Def, NGK, GRP and Brad Anderson Enterprises for supporting the team in 2015.
