ENGLISHTOWN, N.J. (June 21) -- Raymond Commisso collected his second Ohio Crankshaft Low Qualifier Award of the 2008 season Saturday afternoon when his 5.989 at 239.36 mph from Friday kept his ProCare Rx Firebird on top of the JEGS ProMod Challenge ladder. The feat is worth $1,000 from Ohio Crankshaft, an official sponsor of the JEGS series.
This marks the fourth time Commisso has topped the qualifying sheets in NHRA action, placing him in a tie for third on the all-time list. Only reigning champion Josh Hernandez (11) and Fred Hahn (8) have more No. 1 qualifying efforts to their credit.
"When we made the 5.98 pass we had an ignition problem that came back to bite us today, but we are confident we fixed the problem for first round tonight," Commisso said. "We knew with the weather today that our No. 1 qualifier position would most likely stick, and I am excited to start from the top position for the second time this season with many thanks to my crew, all my sponsors, Roger Burgess with ProCare Rx, and my family back at home rooting me on."
John Russo (5.993), Kirk Kuhns (6.018), and Hernandez (6.043) rounded out the top four.
Commisso will race newcomer Nick Montana in Round 1. Montana qualified 16th with a 6.447 in his Camaro. Hernandez opens opposite NMCA star Vinny Budano (6.293), another fill-in racer that successfully qualified for this event.
Series regulars Steve Engel, Jay Payne, and Scott Ray all missed the cut in a qualifying session that was shortened by one round due to time constraints. Engel won the last event on tour in Bristol and entered E-town 10th in the points. Former series champion Payne was a lofty fourth overall, while Ray was closing in on the top-10 from the No. 12 position.
