Tonight the NHRA made a GREAT decision and provided the fans who stayed after 4 different rain delays with a historic few moments on Thunder Mountain.
At 10:53pm local time, Greg Anderson officially became the first pro stock driver to dip into the six-second zone at Bandimere Speedway. Anderson clicked the clocks off 6.993-seconds after dumping the clutch in his Summit Racing Pontiac.
The honor however was short lived as the very next pair layed down the very first side-by-side Pro Stock six-second runs. Mike Edwards in the right lane ran a solid 6.995-second elapsed time @ 196.62 miles per hour.
The guy in the other lane, really brought the house down.
Allen Johnson, the driver of the Mopar sponsored Dodge Stratus hit one out of the park. In what could be considered a perfect run, Johnson recorded a 6.964 ET @ 197.10 mile per hour blast to claim the number one position at his sponsors race.
Not to be outdone by the Gas-floppers, their Nitro-powered counterparts put on quite a show.
On a track which sat at 68 degrees for the better part of two hours, Antron Brown ran the fourth fastest speed in the 1,000-foot era, 318.39 mph. Right behind him in speed was Cory Mac who currently sits on the provisional pole-position. His 3.882-second elapsed time set the pace.
All in all, this night which began with doubt and concern, turned out to be one of the most impressive evenings I have ever witnessed at a NHRA Event.
Kudos to all who made it happen.
