Del Worsham was unable to negotiate a full pass under the Saturday sun
at Atlanta Dragway, but the warmer temps kept things well in order here and Worsham's position, as well as his first-round opponent, remained unchanged from Friday night. Worsham qualified in the No. 10 position, and will face legendary racer Kenny Bernstein in the first round.
That first round match-up will be Worsham's 600th career round appearance. His current lifetime record is 313-286, which includes a 4-9 record in Top Fuel, a class he competed in during parts of the 1993, 1994, and 1995 seasons.
"My gut feeling was that nothing would change at all today, and that almost ended up being true," Worsham said. "Nobody who was outside the field could move into it, and only Gary Densham was able to improve his spot today, so I'm glad we got a good number on the board on Friday night. If you messed up on Friday night, you were in trouble here, that's for sure. It wasn't that bad out there, and if it's like this on Sunday I think the fans will see some great racing, but a lot of what you saw today was teams pushing it a little to see what was really out there, in terms of the track. If you had a 4.78 or better on the board, you were pretty safe, so it was worth it to lean on it a little to see what you'll be able to get away with on Sunday.
"On our last pass, I think we had a glitch somewhere. The car just didn't leave the line with the normal power, and it shook the tires. We'll go over all the data and the equipment before we leave here tonight, and try to sort that out. Now, we have to get ready to run Kenny, who is one of the true legends and his driving lately has shown he still has it. Kenny was one of the two pro drivers who signed off on my license, back in 1990, so it will be an honor to line up against him here."
