After battling unmerciful weather thus far in 2008, the Northeast Outlaw Pro Mod Association is hoping for better conditions in the near future, as the fast doorslammer club announces two upcoming events in July. Club members are optimistic in their scheduled return to their home track, Cecil County Dragway on Saturday, July 5. On tap is a 1/4 mile contested 8-car shootout.
One week later, the Northeast Outlaws will roll into New Jersey's Atco Raceway for the first Lend America Northeast Outlaw "Extreme" race of the 2008 season, scheduled for Saturday, July 12. "Extreme" is a worthy description of this special event, as fans will be treated to a very diverse drag racing experience. Four distinct performance combinations will go head to head in two separate 8-car fields. Nitrous assisted doorslammers will battle normally aspirated mountain motor entries, while blower cars will race turbos. "I want to get the word out that IHRA-legal blower cars and turbo entries both have a place to race with the Northeast Outlaws," says club founder John Mazzoranna.
Extreme payout is also the order of the day. A heathy purse of $5,000 goes to the winner of each 8-car field. After a victor is declared from each field, a "King of the hill" run off is staged between the winners, where an additional $3,500 goes to the winner and $1,500 is awarded to the runner-up. The Atco Extreme event on July 12 promises to be action packed and heavy with entries.
Many of the Northeast Outlaw members routinely compete on the national event level, where they gain widespread exposure. Attending the recent NHRA Super Nationals in Englishtown, NJ, includes NMCA Champion, Vinny Budano; Funny Car pilot and Northeast Outlaw sponsor, Mike Ashley and Long Island-based chassis builder, Nick Montana. These national event-caliber drivers and many more are longtime members of the Northeast Outlaw Pro Mod Association.
In fact, many stars of the heads-up drag racing world have their roots firmly planted in this organization. Club members Mike Castelanna, John Bartunick, Mike Ashley, Jim Halsey, Pat Musi, John Nobile and Tommy Gray (to name a few) have all enjoyed national headlines. In less than a two year span, Vinny Budano, along with club member and track owner, Jim Halsey, have each appeared on the cover of Drag Illustrated magazine, bringing a definite element of recognition to the Northeast Organization.
Many new cars are expected to roll to the starting line this season as well. Club members, Drew Parisi, Fred Scriba, Ed Burnley, Tim O'Hare, Frank Patille, Mark Pullen, Steve Cossis, Dave Hance, Bruce Mullin and Steve Carrier have reported their intentions to debut newly constructed or newly purchased race cars. "We're anxious to see everyone's new rides, and look forward to the fresh look of the new season," commented John Mazzoranna. "Throw in the fact that we've been battling the rain, these guys have a lot of pinned up energy and they're eager to let it out at these two upcoming races," added Mazzoranna.
