Northeast Outlaw Pro Mods ready for season opener at Cecil County

(May 26, 2008) Huntington, NY - The wait is all but over for the 2008 season-opening event of the Northeast Outlaw Pro Mod Association. Rising Sun, Maryland's Cecil County Dragway is now the relocated site of the season-opener, after rain washed out the previously scheduled launch at Numedia Dragway 2 weeks ago.

Cecil County Dragway, owned by Pro Mod superstar Jim Halsey, is recognized as the home track of the Northeast Outlaw Pro Mod Association, a series founded by John Mazzoranna in 1992. Cecil County will host the action-packed "Extreme" race opener on Saturday, May 31.

"Extreme" is a worthy description of this special event, as fans will be treated to a very diverse drag racing experience. Four distinct performance combinations will square off in two separate 8-car fields. Nitrous assisted doorslammers will battle normally aspirated mountain motor entries, while blower cars will race turbos. "If I'm short on anything I think it will be blower cars, and I want to send a message loud and clear that all competitors who drive IHRA-legal blower cars as well as turbo entires has a place to race with the Northeast Outlaws," says John Mazzoranna.

A purse of $5,000 goes to the winner of each 8-car field. After a winner is declared from each side, a "King of the hill" run off is staged, where an additional $3,500 goes to the winner and $1,500 is awarded to the runner up. "This has the makings of a very interesting race, there's a lot different people coming from a lot of different classes," says 3-time reigning NMCA Street Car Champion, Vinny Budano, who plans to compete in the upcoming event. Budano's drag racing roots are firmly planted in the Northeast Outlaw series, and his involvement dates back to 1994. "Cecil County is a special place to me, and I'm looking forward to Saturday's event", commented Budano, who serves and team driver and general manager for Scott Shafiroff Racing Enterprises.

Long Island, NY chassis builders Nick and Chris Montana tested at Cecil County last week and have several #1 qualifier honors to their credit at Cecil County. "We're expecting a lot of cars at this race, and they'll be probably 5 or 6 Pro Mods that came from our shop," said Nick Montana.

Not surprising, Jim Halsey himself has experienced a great deal success on the Northeast Outlaw circuit, particularly at his home court drag strip. Halsey has won plenty of events in this series, and holds the elapsed time record at Cecil County with a 6.13.

Also expected to attend Saturday's opener is Mike Ashley, who sponsors the series through his Lend America mortgage company. Fresh off a final round appearance in Bristol recently, Ashley hopes to give the competition a fight in Cecil County on Saturday.

Multi-time event winner Steve Cossis is also expected to attend, along with guys like Gary Courtier, Tim O'Hair, Fredy Scriba, Mark Hayes, David Hance, Milt Decker and Vinny Dimieri, just to name a very few. The list of names who've competed in this series, both past and current members, is for certain a "who's who" list of doorslammer movers and shakers. People like Tom Martino, John Nobile, Mike Castellana and Pat Musi have all been involved with the Northeast Outlaw Pro Mod Association. "These guys are competitors on the line, but aside from that we get together as friends, have BBQs and good times, that's why it's a club more than anything," says founder, John Mazzoranna.

Saturday's opener at Cecil County has all the makings of being a memorable and action-packed event. For more information about the Northeast Outlaw Pro Mod Association, you may visit: Northeast Outlaw Pro Mod Association - Home
