JOLIET, Ill. (June 7) – For the third straight year, and sixth time overall, the $20,000 top prize in the team competition in the annual JEGS Sportsman Allstars race went to the team from NHRA’s Northeast Division. At the end of the competition, which features the best sportsman drag racers from each of NHRA’s seven geographic divisions, the teams from Division 1 (Northeast) and Division 2 (Southeast) were tied with 900 points each but the Division 1 team claimed the title via a tie breaker, which factored the overall performance of each team. The Division 4 (South Central) team finished third.
Leading the way for the Division 1 team was Michael Sawyer, who claimed the win in Super Gas over Division 3 representative Carl Root. The Division 1 team was also helped by six-time JEGS Allstars champ Frank Manzo, who reached the final round of Top Alcohol Dragster before being turned aside by Division 7 (Pacific) racer Doug Gordon, who upset the 11-time champion, 5.62 to 5.65.
Thomas Bayer scored the lone win for the Division 6 (Northwest) team when he claimed the Top Alcohol Dragster title over Division 4’s Brandon Pierce, 5.40 to 5.47. The defending event champions also performed well as Sal Biondo (Comp), Ron Erks (Super Comp), and Craig Abbott (Super Street), successfully defended their titles.
