In 1966 at the legendary Winternationals at Pomona Raceway, the NHRA held that sanctioning body's very first qualified 32-car show.

Mark if that is the 32 car show, how many did not make the field. I was there with my father also.
 
This is comes from my bald and old noggin', I believe with out any research into my collection I think it was 61 cars going for those 32 spots. Don Westerdale in the famous "Ramchargers" fueler did not make the call for first round due to the fact if memory serves me right that he mauled and chewed up 2, maybe 3 engines during the week and ran out of parts.

One last tidbit, over those 3 days, over 90,000 fans packed out Pomona, think about that, 90,000 fans over 3 days.
