“Part of our difficulty in putting a deal together is we already have a Pennzoil car, a Mopar car, a NAPA car, a Matco Tools car, so I can’t go to anything automotive to get a sponsor,” Tony Schumacher said. “If I had my own team, I could go to anyone I want and ask if they want to compete, but it’s not. We’re part of this big team and I think we’re blocked out of a lot of angles.

a year ago this comment (nbc motorsports talk / nbc sports / yahoo sports) https://motorsports.nbcsports.com/2019/04/17/nhra-missing-in-action-where-is-tony-schumacher/
“When a company aligns themselves with DSR, not only are they joining forces with the winningest team in NHRA history, but they’re aligning themselves with all of our corporate sponsors. … To any potential sponsor, we say ‘welcome.’ Now is the perfect time to get involved with NHRA Drag Racing.”

IMO this endeavor has proven more difficult than imagined. am hopeful for return to racing.

You NEVER see Matco Tools on Capps team as it just "disappeared" after Carlyle Tools was pushed by Napa to be on the car. I understood why. The same can be said for the entire DSR Organization with the Mopar relationship, expect for Antron Brown and Toyota. Capps team represented matco for about 10 years until Carlyle came in (I believe 2014), and it seems like they said, "we are fine with the Matco link, just keep it off our car.“ I believe Anton got with Toyota before the giant deal dsr has with MOPAR now (I believe 2011). Like Carlyle, Mopar/Toyota both know of the others existences and seem fine with it by "Just keep it off our car."

How come Tony cannot go out and pick whatever he can get? Capps seems to have no conflict of interest issues. Brown owns his on team (A little hard to see how), he does not seem to have any conflict of interest when he was/50% is employed by Don, and the confusing part of him having his own team now. He is still in high association with Mopar, running out of a MOPAR based team who have FIVE STRONGLY linked teams and he is the Auto outlier.

I'm only guessing here, but...

How many sports attract multi-million-dollar marketing partnerships with 50-year-old participants? Seniors golf, maybe...? I don't know.

The article says Tony is having to trawl fresh waters to avoid conflicting with existing DSR partners. We all know what an exemplary job he did representing the Army for 19 years (19!), and we all know that drag racers can enjoy astonishingly long competitive careers -- Tony could easily have further championships ahead of him. Yet in the outside world in which he is now fishing, elite sport is surely seen as a young person's game.

As I say, I'm just guessing. I'd love to see Tony back in drag racing -- if not driving himself, perhaps as a 'team principal' with a marketable young driver in the seat (Ashley Sanford, anyone?).

I'd think in these times getting a sponsorship would be very hard. When the economy comes back, I think things will ease up some.
