WESTCOTT TAKES MOPAR HEMI CHALLENGE

BELLE ROSE, La. – Defending series champion Charlie Westcott Jr. continued his near total domination of the Mopar Performance Hemi Challenge Series with another victory at the fourth annual NHRA JEGS.com Cajun SPORTSnationals being held this weekend at No Problem Raceway Park.

Westcott, of Parma , Mich. , drove his Warfish Barracuda to a string of 8.6-second runs to reach the final round where he made the quickest run of the weekend with an 8.59 to take the win. Westcott was scheduled to face Jim Daniels and his Ray Barton Racing Dodge Dart, but Daniels, who was competing in his first Hemi Challenge event, was unable to make the final due to an electrical problem. For the victory, Westcott earned $5,000 from Mopar Performance.

“We came down here with the intention of winning the race so we accomplished our goal,” said Westcott. “That [8.59] run in the final was a pretty good pass but it could have been even quicker. If I had really leaned on it, I could have run an 8.54 or 8.55. I had five customer engines here so that made for a pretty busy weekend, but in the end it was all worth while.”

The Mopar Hemi Challenge was just one of many special events held on Saturday during the Jegs.com Cajun SPORTSNationals. Saturday’s highlights also included the Top Sportsman and Top Dragster Shootouts, the King of the Bayou competition, and final qualifying.

Michael Manners of Willis , Texas , moved passed Joey Marcotte of Denham Springs , La. , to end qualifying in the number one position. Manners ran a pass of 6.177 seconds at 221.05 mph while, Marcotte’s pass of 6.183 seconds at 226.58 mph fell slightly short.

Chase Williams of Carthage , Texas finished qualifying in the number one position in Comp Eliminator with a run of 8.769 seconds to slide passed the number two qualifier Michael Johnson of Springdale , Ark.

In Super Stock, Bobby Dennis of Shorter, Ala. , drove a ’91 Oldsmobile to take the first spot with a time of 10.755 seconds. Dennis qualified just above James Caro of Houma , La. , who drove a ‘05 Dodge.

Stock driver Jerry Davis of Santa Fe , Texas , took his ’72 Duster for a pass of 10.887 seconds to qualify above Edmond Richardson of Greenbrier, Tenn.

The top qualifier in the Sportsman Motorcycle category was local racer Randal Guitreau of Prairieville, La. , and the number two position went to Peter Pollet of Paulina , La.

In the other specialty races, Bert Prejean of St. Amant , La. , won the Top Sportsman Shootout defeating Corey Glidewell of Corinth , Miss. In the Top Dragster Shootout Kurt Damron Jr. of Fruitland Park , Fla. , took home the trophy defeating Michael Manners of Willis , Texas .
