[coverattach=1]Split-window Corvette and more power provides optimism for 2009 season
SCHOMBERG, ONTARIO – With a new car, Ike Maier is planning on stepping up this year in Pro Modified Racing Association action.
After selling his previous 1969 G-Force Race Cars Camaro to a team in Switzerland late in 2008, Maier purchased a 1963 split-window Corvette, and along with a new stacker trailer, the third-year PMRA competitor will be running all events this year.
Maier also mentioned he will try his hand at running in some IHRA Pro Modified races, going to the Grand Bend Motorplex and US 131 Motorsports Park in Martin with the new car, painted black with ghosted flames.
He added the car has been a winter project, and is close to completion.
“The car looks pretty, but it’s not ready,” he commented. “Right now we’re making it IHRA legal. We’ve got all the parts, we’re just starting to put them in.”
The new car will feature an ERD (Engine Research and Development) Brad Anderson (BAE) 526-cubic inch Supercharged Hemi powerplant from the shops of Carl Spiering, and will be maintained by engine ace Kirk Silbermann, who is also part of the team, along with Joe Roy, Blair Archer and Debbie Doucet.
Sponsored by Maier Trucking, Ajax Engines, ERD (Engine Research & Development), King Tool & Die, Speedmaster Marine, Maier’s main goal for 2009 is to win some races, and has concentrated on building a car with more power, something he feels he has been lacking previously. He placed sixth in PMRA points in 2008, and his best showing to date was going to the final round in the season-closer at Cayuga Dragway last September.
The PMRA will compete at several drag strips in 2009, including dates at Toronto Motorsports Park in Cayuga, Ontario, starting with the season opener on May 16 and 17, at St. Thomas Dragway on July 11 and 12, and a season-closer at the Southwestern Ontario track of the Grand Bend Motorplex on September 5 and 6.
Negotiations are underway way with several US race tracks based in Michigan, New York, Ohio and Pennsylvania as well as Quebec with the plan of presenting a six or seven event PMRA drag racing series for 2009.
