The earlier thread, “Bob Glidden – Atlanta 1981”, prompted me to dig out some of my own snapshots from that race.
Through the 1980s I covered NHRA events for several UK publications. Atlanta 1981 – the inaugural Southern Nationals – was my first assignment, for Custom Car magazine. Back then, NHRA’s photo credential was just a numbered tin badge, and I found I’d been given badge number 001 (historic artefact, huh?).
Like some other Southern dragstrips of that time, the track was set into a cutting with only an 8ft-wide concrete pathway separating it from the spectators on either side. There was a dugout by the start line alongside the right lane.
