MEMPHIS (Sept. 29) ---The O’Reilly Midsouth Nationals marked the first event with veteran tuner Mike Kloeber calling the shots on the Monster Energy Funny Car tea m.
On Kloeber’s first weekend turning the wrenches for the Kenny Bernstein team, driver Tommy Johnson, Jr. qualified in the No. 14 position with a 4.167/296.50.
“Considering that Mike came onboard Tuesday of race week, he did a highly commendable job making tuning calls on a race car he just got his hands on. Though assistant crew chief Danny DeGennaro was able to provide valuable input, it’s quite an undertaking to join a team and be in competition three days later.”
In the first round of Sunday’s eliminations, Johnson faced off against John Force. Both drivers left evenly out of the gate, but by half track, the Monster Energy Funny Car lost traction, awarding the round win to Force.
“We have one week off before we compete in Richmond , Va. ” said Johnson. “I’m optimistic going forward that we can make some good progress.
“We also want to say how proud we are to continue our test program with the U.S. Air Force. NHRA drag racing has brought an element of excitement to their recruiting process and we have enjoyed spending time with the Air Force officers and potential recruits.”
