MONSTER ENERGY/LUCAS OIL TEAM MAINTAINING CONFIDENCE DESPITE EARLY DEPARTURE IN SONOMA
SONOMA, Calif. ( July 29) – Despite a competitive qualifying effort, six-time champion Kenny Bernstein’s race day hopes at the Fram Autolite Nationals literally went up in smoke.
Bernstein qualified eighth at Infineon Raceway with a 4.794-second elapsed time at 324.98 mph.
In the opening round of Sunday’s eliminations, Bernstein rolled into the staging beams to face Robert Hight. Bernstein was first off the starting line with a .067-second reaction time, but soon lost traction and began to spin the tires. Hight won the round, 4.843/315.86 to Bernstein’s 9.041/93.42.
“We were the No. 8 qualifier and Robert was ninth,” said Bernstein. “We were pretty evenly matched and we thought we had a good chance.
“I maintain that we are a better team than we’re showing right now. We have continued to work through gremlins along the way, but I feel that whenever we pull our Monster Energy/Lucas Oil Funny Car to the line, we have a good chance of taking the round win. Today we were disappointed, but we’re keeping our confidence high.”
Bernstein remains 14th in Funny Car standings 179 points out of the countdown to eight.
