KENT, Wash. --Washington resident Jeannine Johnson, a young and quickly rising star in the world of drag racing, will be the guest of her new associate sponsor, Funny Car pilot and Lend America executive Mike Ashley, during the Schuck's NHRA Nationals in Seattle Washington this weekend.
At an ESPN-arranged event in April, the two met for lunch at the ESPN Zone restaurant in Times Square, and during their time together, Johnson and Ashley each talked about their passion and love of drag racing. As the meal progressed, Ashley saw in the eyes of a teenager a personal fire for life and a drive to win.
"Jeannine is a truly remarkable person," Ashley said. "She is a great example of what happens when we focus our mental energy to accomplish our dreams. It was an honor to meet her."
Not wanting their new friendship to end after the meal, Ashley offered the 15-year-old Jr. Dragster driver the opportunity to fly the Lend America colors on her car with a sponsorship to help her reach her dreams. And, just like most racers would, she jumped at the chance.
"I know this relationship will be something that will grow," Ashley said. "She's proven that she has what it takes to make things happen. With the challenges she's faced in her life and the things that she has already overcome, it's really evident that Jeannine is one of those people you want to spend time with and get to know - and I'm thrilled that she agreed to let us be a part of making her dreams come true."
From the time she was born, Johnson has been a winner. Weighing in as a preemie at just 1 lb 10 ounces, Jeannine defied the overwhelming odds and has lived a life destined to go places. And just like Ashley, she wants to get there going fast.
"I know she has a lot of exciting things in store for her in the future. Sometimes you just know when things are right - and it's definitely right for Lend America and Gotham City Racing to be a part of her career," he said.
Last weekend, Johnson completed her licensing in Super Comp at Frank Hawley's school in Pomona, and, with a new Brad Hadman racecar currently being built, her prospects keep looking up.
Johnson said, "Being associated with Mike Ashley is really great, because I am chasing my dream, and he has been an incredible help. He's given me lots of advice and I'm really looking forward to learning a lot from him."
