Matt Smith is Looking to Go Even Faster

Torco Racing Fuels Buell rider Matt Smith is ready to get back at it. After three weeks off in the NHRA Pro Stock Motorcycle class, Smith has been working hard in and out of the shop and is ready to get things underway at Atlanta Dragway.

At the top of the charts at each race so far this year, Smith is still looking to go faster.

“We have tested a lot of different things during the last few weeks and I think we are going to be even faster than before. We tested at Darlington Raceway last week and got the bike to go an incredible 1.056 60 foot time and ran a 6.95et. I was blown away. The track was pretty rough, the roughest that I have ever raced on, so these numbers were astounding. However, Dad and I thought the bike had a little more so we changed a few more things and this Buell went out there and went 1.039 at the 60 foot mark, but wouldn’t shift into second. I was speechless, heck we all were. This bike and so much get up and go its crazy. I can’t wait to get to Atlanta and run,” said Smith.

The first race of the year for the Pro Stock Motorcycle class was in Gainesville, FL, Smith was runner-up and set low elapse time every elimination round. Last time out in Houston, TX, Smith qualified No. 1 but fell victim to a red light on raceday.

Smith has had one of the fastest bikes in the class, if not the fastest one at both races this year. After too much down time, Smith is itching to show what he can do on the racetrack and this weekend in Atlanta he will be able to do so.

Smith is third in points and only trails the leader by a mere 43 points. With only nine races to go before the Countdown to the Championship cutoff, Smith is focusing on the top eight for now, then the top four.

“Our goal this year is consistency. We need to go rounds at each race in order to be there for the fight at the end of the year due to the new points system. Right now we are in prime position; the tough part however is staying there, but hopefully we can do it,” said Smith.

Catch Smith along with many other NHRA stars at Atlanta Dragway this weekend, April 27-29. Qualifying starts for the Pros on Friday at 3:30 p.m. then again at 6:30 p.m., followed by Saturday’s qualifying runs at 11:30 a.m. and 2:30 p.m. Sunday’s eliminations will begin at 11am.
