Llewellyn Advances Again

Peggy Llewellyn and the fledgling Karl Klement Pro Stock Motorcycle team continued advancing their learning curve, qualifying well and winning a round at the NHRA Southern Nationals at Atlanta Dragway before falling to the S&S powered flagship Buell of Chip Ellis in round 2.

"We're real proud how well we qualified," said co-crew chief George Bryce. "That's the best Peggy's done yet." Llewellyn and the team qualified 12th their first time out in Gainesville, 8th in Houston, and 6th this weekend in Atlanta. "The whole team's made big advances in performance and Peggy's gaining valuable driving experience."

"We came right off the trailer with a 7.06, which was a pretty good pass," said Shane Maloney, the other crew chief on the Klement team. "We came back out Friday night and put a little tune-up in it. Peggy did good and went a 7.05."

"We kinda stuggled a little bit on Saturday, but came back on Sunday," continued Maloney. "We raced Marco Andreano first round. Peggy cut a pretty good light and drove around him with a 7.06, a nice clean pass."

"After she won first round again, we raced Chip in the second round," said Bryce, who co-owns the G2 Motorsports team that Ellis drives for. It was the first time the two teams butted heads on the track, and Llewellyn got the jump at the tree. "She had an .01 to his .07 reaction time."

"I cut an awesome light!" said an excited Llewellyn. "Then the bike just pulled towards the center, and I tried to get it back."

"She drifted towards the centerline and tried to fix it, and hit the rev limiter hard in a couple of gears," said Bryce.

"And then the engine expired," said Maloney.

"So we really didn't have a chance to win that round but, you know, it's Peggy's third race and she's never been in a position in second round, down to eight bikes, where she has had the chance to win, so, it's new territory for her and the team and it's all teething, you know. It's gonna take us a little a while to get that.

"So we're going home and get Karl and Kim Klement's bike ready to go fast at St. Louis, and load up and go over there and see if can we pick up where we left off and continue to learn and try to get into that top 8 so we have a chance for the Countdown to the Championship".

"We'll rebuild that motor and hopefully get it ready for St. Louis," said Maloney. "It's got speed, so we definitely want to run it again. We're also gonna take our back-up engine and do what we can in 48 hours to make it as good as the one we hurt.

"So all in all it was a good weekend. We made some points, had a good laugh, and worked well together. I'm excited about St. Louis."

"We did well this weekend and we're moving in the right direction," agreed Llewellyn. "You know, I'm just trying to work on my consistency and getting more comfortable on the bike, which is where my consistency is coming from. I'm just glad that we only have three days off and we'll get back to racing in St. Louis."

"We qualified well, went two rounds, and we're still tenth in points," said team owner Karl Klement. "I'm proud of the whole team. Everything is progressing well and we're looking forward to St. Louis."
