BRISTOL, TN – Marking his best outing of 2008, the NHRA Thunder Valley Nationals at Bristol Dragway provided Kirk Kuhns the opportunity to move up to the No. 6 spot in the NHRA JEGS ProMod Challenge point standings.
Driving the Embee Performance ’41 Willys Pro Mod, Kuhns landed in the No. 2 qualifying position with an awesome 6.006-second, 234mph pass in the second round of qualifying on Saturday.
Kuhns knocked off Tim Tindle in the opening round of eliminations with a 6.108-second pass at 225.94 to do it, and then went head to head with Tindle’s teammate Rick Stivers in round two. Kuhns and Stivers left together, but as Stivers encountered problems Kuhns powered on to the win with a 6.111/231.99mph blast. In the semi-final round of action, it was Kuhns’ ’41 Willys and Steve Engel’s ’63 Corvette sitting opposite one another. Kuhns had the lead on the starting line with a .024-of-a-second reaction time to Engel’s .031 (.000 is perfect), but Engels was able to cross the finish line first with a 6.027/238.89 to Kuhns’ losing 6.133/231.99.
“We’re pretty happy with this weekend,” said Kuhns, veteran driver of the Embee Performance Pro Mod. “We’re a little disappointed that we didn’t win that round and gone to the final, but I think we showed what we’re capable of this weekend. Even though we’re at a disadvantage aerodynamic-wise, this ’41 Willys is absolutely flying.”
“Jimmy [Rector, crew chief] has this car on a string, it goes right down Broadway, giving me a car that we can with more often than not. We’re still fighting the big body of these ’41 Willys, though. Danny’s [Rowe, team-owner/driver] car is consistently 5mph faster; I can run the same or even a little better to the 1/8th mile, but the aerodynamics come into play on the big end. Regardless, this team showed its hand a little bit this last weekend.”
Behind the wheel of the Hottinger Group ’68 Camaro, team-owner and driver Danny Rowe went into eliminations in the No. 4 spot with a 6.020-second pass at 238.98mph, setting up a 1st round matchup with Raymond Commisso. Commisso got the starting line advantage with a .054 light to Rowe’s .098 – making all the difference as Rowe’s quicker but losing 6.055/238.55 wasn’t enough to catch Commisso who posted a 6.070/242.32.
“Nobody likes to lose on a holeshot,” started Rowe. “That’s racing, though, and we know that we’ll rebound in Englishtown. We had a good car this weekend; this team had a winning combination – the driver was just a bit off the mark this time.”
“The best part is that we’re in a good position point-wise. We’ve got both our team cars in the Top 10 amongst the best in the business, so we couldn’t be happier with that. If we can stay consistent, keep qualifying well and go some rounds – we’ve got a shot at this NHRA JEGS ProMod Challenge championship.”
The next race for Rowe and Kuhns and the Hottinger Group/Embee Performance Pro Mods will be the NHRA SuperNationals in Englishtown, New Jersey, June 19-22.
