SOMONA, Calif. -- Is it the car or the engine?
Mike Thomas and Dave Northrop will attempt to answer a question that has been dogging Kenny Koretsky and Eddie Guarnaccia for much of this NHRA POWERade Series season in the FRAM Autolite Nationals at Infineon Raceway this weekend.
Koretsky is sending his blue and red Nitro Fish Wear/ISC Racers Tape Pro Stock Dodge Stratus cars to Sonoma, Calif. hoping to solve the mystery.
"Eddie (Guarnaccia, crew chief and team manager) and I decided the only way we can get this thing taken care of is to run both cars," said Koretsky. "We 've been running the blue car with Mike Thomas driving and Larry Morgan motors all year. Last week Mike was in the red car and we tried an Allen Johnson motor. So Mike will be in the blue car with Larry's motor and Dave will drive the red car with Allen's motor.
"We've also rewired both cars to make sure we aren't having an electrical problem somewhere. And if the answer is the cars . . . well, I guess we'll have get new cars."
Thomas drove the red Dodge in Seattle and didn't qualify. Northrop, meanwhile, has qualified several times this season in the red car with Morgan horsepower.
"Eddie called and asked if I wanted to drive this weekend and I jumped at the opportunity," said Northrop, of Perkasie, Pa., who had planned to run 10 races this year. "We've done a lot of testing with both cars but now we can compare our numbers to other cars on a national event track and hopefully get some answers."
Thomas - like Koretsky, Guarnaccia and Northrop - welcomes the approach. He has missed a handful of races by a few thousandths of a second in the ultra-competitive category this year.
"I think it's a fair way for us to be able to see what's going on," said Thomas, of Louisville, Tenn. "I'm looking forward to it."
