DINWIDDIE, Va., Oct 14, 2006 -- Kenny Koretsky's 6.594-second run Saturday afternoon was Pro Stock's second under 6.60 seconds and put him third in the starting line-up for Sunday's Torco Racing Fuels Nationals at Virginia Motorsports Park near Richmond.
The performance was surprising because it came in Koretsky's third run in the Nitro Fish/Indycom Electric Chevrolet Cobalt. Koretsky and Greg Hill combined their Pro Stock teams two weeks ago and this is the Richboro, Pa., driver's first race.
"What a way to start our new partnership with Chevrolet and Greg Hill," said Koretsky. "That run was pretty awesome. It's great to be the second Pro Stock driver to run in the 6.50s, and we ran faster than 208 mph on every run. We hope to go rounds on Sunday."
Koretsky, ironically, races Larry Morgan, who is the engine builders for Koretsky's Nitro Fish Dodge team and driver Dave Northrop. Morgan was 14th, 6.623 at 207.82.
NORTHROP wound up 20th, but he was just one-hundredth of a second off the pace in the quickest Pro Stock field in history with a 6.640-second effort. He basically lost two qualifying runs Friday after a Pro Stock car oiled the track.
"We hurt the motor on the first run and didn't find realize it until the second run," said crew chief Eddie Guarnaccia, "and you can't afford to lose two qualifying rounds in this category. We did have two pretty decent runs Saturday but we weren't able to run quick enough."
MILLICAN's final qualifying effort in the Werner Enterprises/Koretsky Motorsports Top Fuel dragster went up in smoke but crew chief Mike Kloeber may have found the problem.
"We hurt the motor on our first run and replaced the motor," said Kloeber, "and the replacement motor apparently makes more horsepower than the other motor. That's not supposed to happen. This is the first time that's happened here in five years, so we're going to go through the motor Sunday to see what caused it."
Millican's quickest run was 4.721 second.
