Not one to circumvent a situation, Kenny Koretsky knows what he wants to do this weekend at Maple Grove Raceway.
"I don't care about points. I don't care about NHRA's Countdown to the
Championship. I just want to win the race," said Koretsky.
Why? Because this is one of two POWERade Series races held close to Koretsky"s Richboro, Pa., home. This is where the affable driver of Greg Hill's
Indicom Electric/Nitro Fish/Ransome CAT Chevy Cobalt began his racing career more than 30 years ago. And there will be no doubt who's the crowd's favorite Pro Stock driver.
Not only that, but he has a good opportunity to capture that elusive first race victory. Steve Schmidt is providing strong motors, Koretsky has been driving well and crew chiefs Eddie Guarnaccia and Tomi Laine have done a good job preparing the car.
"Obviously this is a very important race for us because it is a hometown race," Koretsky said. "I like seeing all my friends at the track. There's a lot of hustle and bustle and our hospitality area is always busy. I'm looking forward to visiting with all the fans and welcoming all the folks from Ransome CAT, who are sponsoring us this weekend, including Lee Pearson, Mike Kotsch and Wendell Wigley. We are friends who have a business relationship."
Guarnaccia was pleased with the horsepower potential displayed last week at Brainerd and his goal is to get all the power to the ground at Maple Grove. Due to a schedule change, this event was moved up a month and it changes the weather and track dynamics. It should be warmer and - the reason for the schedule alteration - drier than the former September date.
Maple Grove traditionally has yielded low elapsed times, but the August air isn't as likely to produce similar runs.
Koretsky, meanwhile, has been on his game leaving the starting line. He parlayed superb reaction times into a final-round appearance at Bristol, Tenn., last month only to come up two-thousandths of a second shy of his long-sought first NHRA victory.
The team has the potential. So does the driver. "And I think we have a car that can do it," added Koretsky.
Action begins with qualifying rounds Friday (3 and 6 p.m.) and Saturday (11
a.m. and 2 p.m.). Eliminations get underway Sunday at 11 a.m.
