He's been an NHRA competitor for more than half his life, yet Kenny Koretsky still gets goose bumps when the discussion turns to Maple Grove Raceway, near Reading, Pa.
This has been the home track for the Richboro, Pa.-based Pro Stock driver for more than 30 years. He grew up drag racing at the venerable facility that will be hosting the Toyo Tires Nationals, Friday through Sunday.
"I'll be there," said Koretsky, "in front of the hometown crowd and I'm bringing my two Pro Stock cars and my Top Fuel dragster, too."
While Koretsky will be occupying the driver's seat of his blue Nitro Fish/ISC Racer's Tape Dodge Stratus, Dave Northrop, another Pennsylvanian from nearby Perkasie, will be at the controls of the red Nitro Fish/ISC Racer's Tape Dodge.
Koretsky's Nitro Fish/Werner Enterprises Top Fuel team, featuring five-time IHRA Top Fuel champion Clay Millican, will be seeking its first NHRA triumph after amassing 46 in IHRA competition.
"I'm expecting a chaotic weekend, something befitting Captain Chaos," said Koretsky of his sobriquet. “We’re expecting a lot of family, friends, business associates, existing sponsors, possible sponsors and ISC Racers Tape employees. Our hospitality rig will be busy all weekend.
"I'm always excited to go racing at Maple Grove," added the gregarious entrepreneur. “If the predicted weather conditions hold, elapsed times should be very good. I'm looking forward to racing again."
This is just the third time Koretsky has driven since his spectacular accident with Bruce Allen, October 7 at the Texas Motorplex near Dallas. He made his initial return at Brainerd, Minn., last month and drove again at Indianapolis on Labor Day weekend.
He qualified 15th and lost to Pro Stock point leader Jason Line in the first round at Brainerd but did not qualify at Indianapolis.
"Eddie (Guarnaccia, team crew chief) has done a good job getting our cars ready for this race," Koretsky said. "We should run real well for all our friends and family."
The accident - Bruce Allen's car went on its side at the finish line, crossed into Koretsky's lane and Koretsky's car smashed into the underside of Allen's car - "broke my right hand, three ribs, my coccyx bone, bruised my heart and left me with major shoulder pain, along with a lot of other bruises," he recalled. "It took me almost five months before I felt no pain anywhere.
"Right now, I feel fantastic and have no pain anywhere."
Koretsky doesn't think about that frightful collision and readily returned to the race car because, he says, “We are racing in safe cars on a safe track. I definitely feel safer in my Nitro Fish Dodge than I do on the New Jersey turnpike."
Northrop, meanwhile, is making his third trip to Maple Grove as a Pro Stock driver. He began his racing career at Maple Grove, earning his first driver's license at the track. He won the Competition Elimination title at the 2001national event at the track.
"We are looking forward to racing close to home," added Northrop, who has run selected events this year. "We'll have a lot of family, friends and business associates, too. It would be great to get my first Pro Stock round with them watching."
Millican, of Drummonds, Tenn., agrees with Northrop's comments on winning.
Millican has plenty of IHRA round wins but hasn’t been able to string four solid runs together during eliminations to make it pay off.
"This really hasn't been one of our better years," said the affable Millican. "We keep plugging away. Mike Kloeber (crew chief) hasn't forgotten everything he knows. I think we've changed everything in the car that we could except the guy who mashes the gas pedal. Once we find the problem and correct it, we should be great.
"We are coming to Maple Grove intent on using our four qualifying runs to get this thing figured out."
"Kid Chaos" Competing in Diesel Truck Nationals at Raceway Park
ENGLISHTOWN, N.J. - While his dad battles for a starting position at Reading, Kenny Koretsky Jr., aka Kid Chaos, will be attempting to take top honors Saturday in the 10th U.S. Diesel Truckin' Nationals at Old Bridge Township Raceway Park.
Kenny Jr., 20, was runner-up in the diesel truck drag race last year. "He's been working hard getting his truck ready for his race," said Kenny Sr. "He really enjoys the competition. It's certainly a lot different than racing cars."
