MEMPHIS (Sept. 16) – Kenny Bernstein ended his day at the O’Reilly Mid-South Nationals in a smoky first round pedalfest in an ever-competitive Funny Car field.
Bernstein qualified the Monster Energy/Lucas Oil car in14th position with a 4.897/309.98.
The six-time champion squared off against Tommy Johnson, Jr. in the opening stanza of eliminations. Bernstein had the reaction time edge but both drivers were fighting loss of traction early in their runs. Johnson, Jr. was able to get traction to the ground first and won the round with a 5.299/238.81 to Bernstein’s 6.745/127.67.
“We’ll stay in Memphis Monday and do some testing,” said Bernstein. “We’re still in hot pursuit of our 70th career victory and next weekend in Dallas affords us another opportunity. We’re going to concentrate on sharpening some areas of our tune-up in the test session and look to go rounds in Dallas .”
Bernstein is 11th in NHRA Funny Car point standings.
