READING, Pa. (Aug. 19) – Race day at the Toyo Tires Nationals at Maple Grove Raceway brought steady rain following the completion of the first round of Top Fuel and after only three pair of Funny Cars.
Following a No. 13 qualifying effort (4.888/306.95), Kenny Bernstein rolled to the starting line Sunday morning to face point leader Ron Capps.
It was neck and neck down the quarter mile, and Bernstein had the advantage at the 1000-foot mark. Then the Monster Energy/Lucas Oil Funny Car lost traction and began to spin the tires.
“When it lost traction, it dropped a cylinder and took the burst panel out,” said Bernstein. “It was just beginning to mist as we finished running and we were the last pair down the race track Sunday before the rain set in.”
Competition was scheduled to resume Monday morning at 10 a.m. ET .
Point standings are not yet available since the race is not concluded, though Bernstein will not be in the countdown to eight.
“We’re heading to Indianapolis for a couple of days of testing prior to the Mac Tools U.S. Nationals. We want to make a good showing there,” said Bernstein.
