LAS VEGAS – Though Kenny Bernstein has never competed in a Funny Car at The Strip at Las Vegas Motor Speedway, he has an enviable performance record for the spring SummitRacing.com Nationals. In two of three races in which he competed in the Budweiser/Lucas Oil Top Fuel car, he won and was the No. 1 qualifier. He celebrated in victory circle in 2000 and 2001, and shared winning honors with his son Brandon in 2001. Brandon was driving an alcohol dragster and the duo became the first father and son in NHRA history to have won at the same national event.
Six-time champion Kenny will be driving the Monster Energy/Lucas Oil Funny Car April 13-15 and will try to muster some of that winning ‘mojo.’
“The Las Vegas track has been very good to us in the past,” said Bernstein. “Hopefully our good fortune will continue.
“This will be crew chief Jimmy Walsh’s third race with us and he has been making good performance strides with our Dodge Charger. We just need to continue to make runs to collect more data.
“Right now we are 48 points out of the countdown to eight for the championship chase. Though we have 13 races before the field of eight is set, we obviously want to get into the hunt as quickly as we can and burrow in one of those positions.
“For the second consecutive Vegas race, we are happy to announce New York -New York Hotel & Casino as our official Las Vegas hotel.
“Our team enjoys the restaurants, the shows, and of course ‘The Roller Coaster’ in the Big Apple of Las Vegas.
“Look for the New York - New York logo on our Monster Energy/Lucas Oil Funny Car and Budweiser/Lucas Oil dragster over the weekend.”
“One last thought. We still are mourning the loss of Funny Car driver Eric Medlen. We continue to ask for prayers for Eric’s family and that of his extended family at John Force Racing.”
Nitro (Top Fuel and Funny Car) qualifying begins Friday, April 13 at 3:30 p.m. , with a second session at 6:30 p.m. There are two rounds of qualifying Saturday, 12:30 p.m. and 3:30 p.m. , with eliminations scheduled to begin at 11 a.m. Sunday.
