It is a great article, which is why I look forward to Burgess’ updates every Friday.
I was at Tulsa when Wiebe and Jeb Allen crashed and have three or four shots of it while it was happening. The initial hit was directly in front of where I was sitting on the pit side.
It’s bad enough when one car crashes. But, when two get together, it is exponentially worse. I still remember the grinding sound as Wiebe’s car slid down the guardrail.
Thankfully both drivers survived.
Unfortunately, the images are on Ektachrome slides, and Ektachrome does not last very long. They have faded.
But, even when the slides were new, all you could see was flame.
It was awful.

Great read. John mentions a 64 car top fuel show. I just wondered how many of the younger folks on here never got to see a 64 car top fuel or funnycar show.

Wiebe used to bring us Coors at Dragway 42 Back in the day. (For you youngsters there was a time you could not get Coors east of the Mississippi)

Hahahaha, I remember that time. And when I think of my dad "smuggling" Coors out of Kansas to our friends and family in Illinois, I think of the movie Smokey and the Bandit.
