Memphis, TN (9/28/08): Doug Kalitta, driver of the “Big Red”, Mac Tools Top Fuel dragster, racing in his 250th career NHRA Top Fuel event, reached the quarterfinals of Sunday’s eliminations of the O’Reilly NHRA Mid-South Nationals at Memphis Motorsports Park in Millington, Tenn., just a few miles from downtown Memphis. It was Kalitta’s third quarter-final finish of the 2008 POWERade Drag Racing Series.
In the opening round, Kalitta, the No. 3 qualifier (3.838 sec., 311.20 mph), defeated No. 14 qualifier T.J. Zizzo, 3.946 sec., 304.12 mph to 5.663 sec., 119.40 mph. In the quarter-final round, Kalitta and his Mac Tools team rolled to the starting line to race against the Alan Johnson-tuned dragster. The two racers and their machines gave the big crowd at MMP a terrific side-by-side race, but in the end it was Kalitta coming in second by a scant .0191 seconds (3.902 sec., 304.74 mph to 3.889 sec., 310.55 mph).
Kalitta took home the Top Fuel title trophy from Memphis in 2006.
Kalitta is in 9th place in POWERade championship points and in the NHRA Countdown to 1 postseason. There are now three events remaining in the 2008 Countdown to the Championship.
