Pomona, Calif., (Feb. 10, 2007) - The NHRA POWERade Drag Racing Series kicked off the 2007 quarter-mile racing season in grand style at the season-opening CARQUEST Auto Parts NHRA Winternationals at record-setting Auto Club Raceway at Pomona in Pomona, Calif., with the quickest final elimination fields in the history of the world's fastest motorsport in both of the nitro-fueled professional classes of Top Fuel and Funny Car.
Doug Kalitta, driver of the Mac Tools Top Fuel dragster, rode his red, 8,000-horsepower rail into the No. 4 qualifying slot for Sunday's 16-car final eliminations field with a best effort of 4.495 seconds at 323.50 mph. He will race his Team Kalitta teammate and No. 13 qualifier Hillary Will (4.545 sec., 322.81 mph) in the opening round of eliminations. Will's race car is managed by Kalitta Motorsports and owned by Ken Black.
Doug's teammate Dave Grubnic, driver of the electric blue and black Zantrex-3 Top Fuel dragster, drove his straight-line rocket on wheels into the No. 8 qualifying position (4.517 sec., 327.35 mph). He will face off against No. 9 qualifier Mike Strasburg (4.518 sec., 328.78 mph) in round one.
Funny Car pilot and Kalitta Motorsports team driver Scott Kalitta, driver of the Kalitta Air Toyota Solora Funny Car, will also start his 2007 NHRA campaign on a high note with a solid No. 7 qualifying position (4.741 sec., 317.05 mph). He will roll to the starting line to race No. 10 qualifier Tony Pedregon (4.749 sec., 317.42 mph) in the first round tomorrow.
