SOMONA, Calif.(July 29) -- Tommy Johnson Jr. raced his special edition Skoal RacingSM Chevy Funny Car to the No. 12 qualifying position Saturday at Infineon Raceway after recording a 4.857-second elapsed time! on Friday evening at the Bruton Smith-owned facility.
Johnson's quickest qualifying attempt came Friday evening under the lights at Infineon Raceway when he used a tune-up from crew chief Mike Green to maneuver the quarter mile strip in 4.857 seconds at 314.31 mph to claim the 12th quickest attempt. The Skoal Racing flopper lost traction on its other three qualifying passes.
"We found something that's been plaguing us for awhile," Johnson said. "We were a little too aggressive in the middle part of the track on that last run. That's an easy fix. The early numbers were really strong. We should be a strong car on race day. Plus, we qualified 12th and we seem to do well from that spot. I feel confident about Sunday."
For the second consecutive week, Johnson will battle 2003 NHRA Funny Car champion Tony Pedregon in the first round of Funny Car eliminations, which begin at Noon (PT) on Sunday at Infineon Raceway.
