POMONA, Calif. - J.R. Todd may not have had the quickest Top Fuel dragster in the quickest starting line-up in NHRA history, but he does have an extremely competitive SKULL Shine racing machine going into Sunday's Carquest Winternationals at Auto Club Raceway at Pomona -- NHRA's traditional season-opener.
Todd's best run was 4.500 seconds at 325.77 mph while his other three times did not stray much farther away. He added runs of 4.515, 4.532 and 4.504 seconds and was fifth overall. The quickest field went from Tony Schumacher's 4.472 to Joe Hartley's 4.575 seconds.
"All of us were expecting to run better on that last run and Jimmy was going for it," said Todd, who meets Melanie Troxel (No. 12, 4.541 at 332.51 mph) in the first round. "We made four good runs and that was a morale boost for our team. We are upbeat and looking forward to Sunday."
