Ohio native Jim Pancake earned the Mopar® HEMI® Challenge Race Series victory today at the Jegs Northern SPORTSnationals after defending event champ Jim Daniels of Bristol, Pa. was unable to stage for the final round at National Trail Raceway. Pancake scored his third career Mopar HEMI Challenge win despite an infection in his left leg that caused him serious discomfort throughout the event.
Pancake, of Delaware, Ohio, came from deep in the field to claim the win after qualifying No. 10 in his Super Stock/A HEMI (SS/AH) 1968 Dodge Dart with a 8.649-second pass. He defeated 1968 Plymouth Barracuda driver Tyler Hard in the opening round with an 8.572/154.44 mph pass to Hard’s 9.029/155.49 run.
Pancake showed off his driving skills in the second round, knocking off Larry Perkins Sr. on a holeshot win. Pancake’s 8.605/153.96 mark was slower than Perkins’s 8.587/154.90 effort, but his .033 reaction time bested Perkins’ .079 effort, providing Pancake enough margin to claim the round win.
The owner of Carriage Towne Chrysler Dodge Jeep® had a bye into the final round against Daniels, who drove his Ray Barton Racing Engines 1968 Dodge Dart past Stephen Herbert, Charlie Westcott Sr. and Gary Wolkwitz on his way into the final. With Daniels unable to make the call for the final, Pancake took home his second career Jegs Northern SPORTSnationals Mopar HEMI Challenge win, recording an 8.532/154.44 mark in his uncontested run—his best pass of the event.
“I can’t say enough about Jim Holt Racing,” said Pancake, who planned to seek medical attention for his leg after the event. “They built the chassis for my car, and Jim and his two sons spent the entire weekend taking care of the car, and also taking care of me. I also had great performance out of my Ray Barton Racing Engines powerplant
“The Mopar HEMI Challenge class has improved greatly with the quality of the new cars and the intensity of the drivers that compete in the series. I’m very proud to get this win.”
Charlie Westcott Jr. qualified No. 1 in his 1968 “Warfish” Barracuda with an 8.452-second pass but fell in a first-round battle with Perkins Sr. Daniels qualified No. 2, followed by Wolkwitz, Hard and Westcott Sr.
The Mopar HEMI Challenge Race Series, which pits owners of SS/AH 1968 Dodge Darts and Plymouth Barracudas against each other in fierce quarter-mile competition, was formed in 2001 and celebrated its 10th anniversary season this year. The Jegs Northern SPORTSnationals marked the final of three 2010 Mopar HEMI Challenge events. For more info on the series, visit Mopar Speed - Home.

More than 70 Years of Mopar
When Chrysler bought Dodge in 1928, the need for a dedicated parts manufacturer, supplier and distribution system to support the growing enterprise led to the formation of the Chrysler Motor Parts Corporation (CMPC) in 1929.
Mopar (a simple contraction of the words MOtor and PARts) was trademarked for a line of antifreeze products in 1937. It also was widely used as a moniker for the CMPC. The Mopar brand made its mark in the 1960s—the muscle-car era. The Chrysler Corporation built race-ready Dodge and Plymouth “package cars” equipped with special high-performance parts. Mopar carried a line of “special parts” for super-stock drag racers and developed its racing parts division called Mopar Performance Parts to enhance speed and handling for both road and racing use.
