(May 08 2008) Street, MD - As Jim Halsey stood in Gene Fulton's Spartanburg, SC engine shop yesterday, thoughts of a convincing rebound were going through his mind. Funny how a single event can cast a disappointing shadow on a stellar season, but when you're as competitive as Jim Halsey, you'd like nothing more than a whirlwind turn around at your next outing. Halsey and team, in town for a valve job and head work, pulled out of Spartanburg this morning and headed for Georgia with renewed confidence that a rebound is just ahead on the horizon.
For a drag racer, it's sometimes easy to feel as though you're only as your good as your last race, and for Halsey, his last race didn't go exactly as planned. After a phenomenal early season of competition, ignition troubles caused a second round exit at IHRA's Spring Nationals last month. Serious testing has been performed since the Rockingham outing, as Halsey and team examine their program; correcting what's wrong and replacing it with what's right.
The stage is now set as Halsey hopes to showcase the second chapter of what started as a headlining season, full of widespread recognition when Halsey won a variety of well-publicized events. The redemptive results that were gathered from post-Rockingham test sessions has brought a wind of renewed confidence for Halsey, even as his new Fulton 820 still sits in the trailer. "As we were sorting out the ignition troubles, we didn't want to tear up the new motor, so we just decided to test with the old one", explained Halsey. With the ignition problems corrected, the car was clocking some pretty impressive elapsed times, so Halsey left the current 800 incher in the car for this weekend's ADRL event in Georgia.
Although he has tested there twice, most recently in February, Halsey has never raced in competition at Valdosta's South Georgia Motorsports Park. The second stop on a 9 race roster of events, ADRL returns to the facility for the fourth straight year since the sanctioning body's inception. With 2 career ADRL event wins to his credit, including the season opening Houston event, Halsey is 90 points out of first place. Also scoring early season wins in other venues, Halsey maintains his lead in both the Quick-8 Racers Association as well as IHRA Pro Modified World Championship points chase.
