JEGS Pacific SPORTSnationals presented by K&N Underway at Auto Club Dragway (1 Viewer)

(April 17, 2009) – Nearly 400 sportsman competitors from across the country have traveled to Auto Club Dragway at Auto Club Speedway to compete at the JEGS NHRA Pacific SPORTSnationals presented by K&N. The SPORTSnationals series concentrates its attention on the Sportsman ranks, while maintaining the importance and thrills of a National event. Featured NHRA Lucas Oil Drag Racing Series categories include Comp Eliminator, Super Stock, Stock, Super Comp, Super Gas, and Super Street. The division’s Top Sportsman and Top Dragster classes along with Sportsman Motorcycle presented by Harley Davidson will also run in conjunction with the race.

Leading the pack was local racer John Edwards of Claremont, Calif., who drove his ’99 Neon to the top qualifying pole in the Comp Eliminator field. Hot on his heels in the No. 2 spot is Dean Carter of Glendale, Ariz., who took the Comp crown here in 2007. Brian McClanahan, Alta Loma, Calif., started the event off very well by posting the No.1 qualifying position in Super Stock and registered the second best pass in Stock behind Brian Tait, from Fraizer Park, Calif.

In other action, J Wayne Silvia of Upland, Calif., ran a time of 6.756 seconds at 207.40 mph, to lead the very fast Top Sportsman class. In Hughes Performance Top Dragster competition, Henderson, Nev., resident Lyle Burnham powered his rail to a 6.587 second pass at over 200 mph. The lead pole in Sportsman Motorcycle went to Lance Samson of Tucson, Ariz., posting a 0.003-second reaction time.

The fun continues tomorrow with qualifying and time trials scheduled for 8 a.m. Saturday and Sunday general admission tickets are $20 per day for adults and children 12 and under are free.
