[coverattach=1]The 400-plus members of the American Auto Racing Writers and Broadcasters Association (AARWBA) voted back-to-back POWERade Pro Stock champion Jeg Coughlin Jr. to its 39th annual All-America Auto Racing Team. This is the fourth time Coughlin has been named to the All-America Team, with an appearance in each of his four championship seasons (2000, '02, '07, and '08).
Coughlin remained perfect in the playoff era of NHRA competition, successfully defending his 2007 title by winning the most in the six-race post season. In total, Coughlin won three races in eight final-round showings, meaning he reached the money round an amazing one out of every three races in 2008. His career total of 54 national event wins puts him firmly in the top 10 of NHRA's all-time list, heady stuff for a 38-year-old racer who appears to be just now reaching his prime.
Consistency was key in Coughlin's 2008 title run. He never dipped below fourth place in the POWERade rankings and was a class-best 43-20 in elimination rounds. He also collected three low qualifier awards this past season, a personal best.
