Janis Takes home his 14th Career Iron Man with a win at the Suzuki Motor City Nationals

July 9, 2006 - Milan, MI – For some the pressures of performing in front of your major sponsor at their home town track can be overwhelming but, Mike Janis and his Eaton sponsored Pro Mod team seem to thrive under pressure. Janis took home his first win of 2006 with a win over Danny Rowe at Milan Dragway in Milan, Mi., during the IHRA eMax Series Suzuki Motor City Nationals. The win moved Janis in to fourth in the 2006-point standings, just six rounds behind leader Glen Kerunsky.

With Eaton having 17 Locations in and around Detroit “The Motor City” Mike Janis and his team were salivating at the chance to show the “home town” crowd what his Eaton Supercharged Cobalt could do and they didn’t waste any time doing it. Right out of the box Janis posted a 6.111 elapsed time and staked claim to the Milan surface, which has been so good to him over the years. “We’ve won here 3 out of 4 years coming into this year and with Eaton’s automotive division just up the road we’ve become very familiar with this facility. Eaton puts on a great event here each year and we get to use the on track time for testing so, we feel right at home here,” said Mike Janis.

The hometown feel was evident on Saturday night as Eaton hosted nearly 100 employees and clients at the track, but while they were enjoying a relaxing day at the races it was anything but relaxing for Janis and his crew. During the first qualifying run on Saturday Janis’ engine quit before the finish line. Initially the team thought an ignition part had failed and replaced it for the next and final qualifying attempt.

For the final attempt Crew Chief Mike Janis Jr. knew that the team’ 6.111 would hold for the number one spot and felt they needed to go after an 0 to hold onto that number one qualifying spot. “We had everything set to really get after it but once the car passed half track I could see something wasn’t right. She ran a 6.20 but it just had no power and we dropped to second behind Rick DiStefano’s 6.08. We later found out that our ignition problems from the previous round were just the effect of a bigger problem and we made the decision to go with our back up power plant for eliminations. Only problem was that we needed to scavenge some parts off of our primary engine so it turned into a very long night.”

With just a few hours sleep Mike Janis wheeled his Eaton/Aeroquip backed Cobalt into a first round win over the defending IHRA Pro Mod Champ, Mike Castellana. The win over Castellana gave Janis lane choice over Steve Bareman and his Jim Oddy tuned Stratus in round two. Bareman, who qualified sixth, took out Taylor Lastor in round one.

In a battle of two Elma, NY based teams it was Bareman who took an early lead but it was Janis who took the win with a 6.19 to Bareman’s tire shaking 9.45.

The win over Bareman gave Janis lane choice over current points leader Glen Kerunsky. Kerunsky, who qualified 12th, defeated a resurgent Ed Hoover in round one and had a solo in round two when his opponent, Jim Halsey failed to make the call. With Kerunsky’s Western Canadian Lumber Jacking abilities well known Janis knew this could be a drivers race. “Glen cuts down a tree like he’s mad at it. I knew I had to be on my game against him but for some reason I was late,” said Janis. Kerunsky was out of the gate first with a psychic reaction time of .011 to Janis’ much slower .119 but Janis was able to rely on his Jan-Cen prepared power plant and was able to make up the difference before the 330 cone. Janis powered by Kerunsky and took a birth 6.180 at just under 230 miles per hour.

Heading into the finals Janis once again held lane choice. His 6.180 from the semi’s bettered his opponent, Danny Rowe’s 6.188. Rowe, who qualified 3rd right behind Janis, defeated a tire smoking Quain Stott in round one, took a freebee in round two from Shannon Jenkins, and soundly defeated Scott Cannon in the semis on his way to his first IHRA Torco Race Fuels Pro Modified finals.

This time it was Janis out of the gate first with a .082 reaction time to Rowe’s .098, but Rowe was within a thousandth after 60 feet. Then Janis made his move using his Jan-Cen prepared horsepower to take the win by nearly a 12 foot margin, a 6.181 to Rowe’s 6.20.

“ This is fantastic! I couldn’t have dreamed of a better outcome after what we went through last night. My crew deserves this one they pour their hearts and souls into this and it shows. I couldn’t do any of this with out these guys behind me. My crew and all my sponsors put us here and I really would like to thank them all. The people from Eaton who are always behind us, Mike, Glenn and Scott, Royal Purple who’s been with us for a long time, Weber’s Mustard and Smith’s Hot Dogs who keep us fed, Evan and the guys from Torco who provide us with the best fuel there is, Nology, and all of the others I’m forgetting right now, I’m Sorry. I would also like to thank G-Force for building one hell of a car. Thank you all,” said an elated Janis.

Next up for Mike Janis and his Eaton/Aeroquip/Jan-Cen backed team is the Canadian Nationals held nearly One hour from Janis’ Lancaster, NY home in Cayuga, Ont. Canada at Toronto Motorsports Park on July 21-23.
