Thank you Phil Burgess for documenting another great contributor to drag racing's golden era. Reading about Jake Johnston and his exploits in funny cars really shows why drag racing was so much more popular in the late 60's/early 70's. That era was dominated by guys(and a woman) who started with nothing and worked, persevered and at times overcame. American heroes traditionally came from that mold. That human drama was a huge draw for our sport.
Race fans, as a rule, love underdogs. It is a crying shame corporate America and sanctioning bodies do not understand something so elemental.
