SOMONA, Calif.(July 29) -- He didn't make it to the other end of the Infineon Raceway quarter-mile track with the throttle open all the way on Saturday as qualifying concluded for Sunday's FRAM Autolite Nationals, but J.R. Todd and the SKULL Shine crew were very happy to wind up with the No. 6 starting position.
Todd's best run of the weekend came Friday night, a 4.585-second, 325.14-mph blast. He was on the way to another 4.5-second time in Saturday's first session when the tires spun hard and the supercharger's burst panel blew. He coasted through in 5.284 seconds at 213.20 mph.
"I didn't think that run would hold up for third place when we ran," Todd said. "It's always good any time you can start in the top half of the field. The tires shook hard on our last run. The tires started spinning almost at the hit of the throttle. We'll be alright for Sunday. Jimmy (Walsh, the crew chief) will have us ready to go some rounds again."
Bradshaw qualified 11th (4.632 at 319.52 mph).
