Cooling the incoming air makes a BIG difference. One of the reasons the Pro Stock cars slowed down with fuel injection is because the fuel atomization from the carbs (way up high) would cool the air. The fuel atomization deep in the manifold from the injectors doesn't cool the intake charge nearly as much. Add to that the fact that the scoop picking air up three inches off the ground where it is hotter than hood level and the problem is worse. If you followed PS closely during the changeover, some of the teams had an extra injector feeding a sprayer in the top of the manifold to cool the air. Until a rule was made: "One injector per cylinder and it must be in the runner." (Not in the plenum).

Here's a story I did on Mike Janis' method to cool the air in Pro Mod.
